Kathy Tate, a sixth generation Texan, was born and grew up in the countryside of north central Texas.
Coming from a long line of artisans, her interest in art began at a very early age while watching her father with his technical drawings and her grandmother as she created beautiful works of art using fabric. Tate quietly cultivated this interest and later studied art and drafting in college. In 1973 at the age of 20 she took her first oil painting classes with New Mexico impressionist Gaitha Browning.
Since those first classes, there have been many artists that have impacted Kathy’s work. Robert Summers’ use of color, George Hallmark’s sunlight and shadow, and C.W. Mundy's painterly approach have been major influences. She has studied with outstanding artists such as C.W. Mundy, Martin Grelle, and Richard Goetz.
“Although I have worked with many mediums, oil is definitely my favorite. The colors, textures and ‘feel’ are like no other medium ...they are very forgiving and tend to have a luminosity not found with other paints.”
In addition to painting, Kathy also teaches oil painting classes and workshops and is on the roster of artists in the Artist in Residence Program with the Texas Commission on the Arts.
Kathy has exhibited in numerous shows including: Oil Painters of America National and Regional Juried Exhibitions; Gilcrease Museum’s American Art in Miniature; Greenhouse Gallery’s Salon International, Mountain Oyster Club’s Show and Sale, and many others. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists, and signature member of American Plains Artists.
Kathy and her husband, Johnny, currently reside near Stephenville, Texas.
